Editorial Policy

The Work Edit is an independent one-person research project, researched and edited by Rowan Vale, a consistent pen name used by the site's editor.

Our goal is to help freelancers, professionals, and small businesses make better software buying decisions by looking beyond headline prices and feature lists.

How we research

We prioritize primary sources: official vendor pricing pages, product documentation, support articles, published terms, and product-update announcements. Secondary sources are used for context or to identify discrepancies, but claims about pricing, plan limits, billing, cancellation, data export, and product features are checked against official vendor sources before publication.

Because software pricing and packaging change frequently, time-sensitive information carries the date it was verified. When official sources conflict, pricing varies by region, or a point cannot be resolved confidently, we make that uncertainty visible rather than silently choosing one version.

How we evaluate products

The Work Edit does not assume that the cheapest plan is the cheapest option in practice. Depending on the product, our comparisons may examine:

  • what causes a business to outgrow an entry-level plan;
  • regular pricing after introductory promotions expire;
  • user, contact, transaction, client, or usage limits;
  • add-ons and other costs that materially affect the total price;
  • downgrade, cancellation, renewal, and data-export conditions; and
  • which trade-offs matter for different types of small businesses.

Recommendations are editorial judgments based on the needs described in each article. A product that makes sense for one business may be a poor value for another.

Hands-on testing

We do not claim to have personally tested a product unless hands-on testing has actually been conducted.

When an article is based on documentation, pricing, support materials, and published terms rather than direct product use, that research basis is stated clearly. When hands-on testing is used, we describe what was actually tested rather than implying broader experience than occurred.

Use of AI

The Work Edit may use artificial intelligence tools to assist with research organization, drafting, comparison, and editorial workflows.

AI-generated information is not treated as an authoritative source. Important factual claims are checked against appropriate sources before publication whenever practical, and final editorial responsibility rests with Rowan Vale.
